modern orbat Qesari Ancient seaport, Palestine. Located on the coast of present-day Israel south of the city of Haifa, it was originally a Phoenician settlement. Taken by the Romans and rebuilt in the 1st century by Herod the Great, it was renamed for his patron Augustus. The capital of the Roman province of Judaea in 6, it was the site of an early Christian church and was often visited by St. Paul. It later declined under Byzantine and Arab rule and was destroyed by the Mamlk sultan Baybars I in the 13th century. Copyright © 1994-2008 Encyclopædia Britannica, Inc.
or Baibars (born 1223, north of the Black Sea—died July 1, 1277, Damascus, Syria) Most eminent sultan of the Mamlk dynasty. A Kipchak Turk, he was sold as a slave (mamlk) after a Mongol invasion in the 1240s. He ended up in the service of the sultan of Egypt's Ayybid dynasty, who gave him military training. In 1250 his army captured the Crusader king Louis IX, and he and other mamlk officers murdered the last Ayybid sultan, establishing the Mamlk dynasty. He distinguished himself against an invading Mongol force at the Battle of 'Ayn Jlt (1260) and soon thereafter took the throne, when he murdered the third Mamlk sultan. As sultan, he rebuilt the Syrian fortresses that had been destroyed by the Mongols and built up the sultanate's armaments. He seized territory from the Crusaders that they were never to recover. He harried the Mongols in Persia, attacking their allies (the Christian Armenians) and forging an alliance with the Mongols of the Golden Horde against them. He sent military expeditions into Nubia and Libya. He had diplomatic relations with James I of Aragon, Alfonso X of León and Castile, and Charles of Anjou, as well as with the Byzantine emperor. At home he built canals and the great mosque in Cairo that bears his name and established efficient postal service between Cairo and Damascus. The Srat Baybars, a folk account purporting to be his life story, is still popular in the Arabic-speaking world. Copyright © 1994-2008 Encyclopædia Britannica, Inc.
orig. Khir later Khayr al-Dn (died 1546) Greek Turkish pirate and admiral in the service of the Ottoman Empire. He and his brother 'Arj, sons of a Turk from Lesbos, hated the Spanish and Portuguese for their attacks on North Africa and took up piracy on the Barbary Coast in hopes of seizing an African domain for themselves. When 'Arj was killed in 1518, Khir took the title Khayr al-Dn. He offered allegiance to the Ottoman sultan and in return received military aid that enabled him to capture Algiers in 1529. Appointed admiral in chief of the Ottoman Empire (1533), he conquered all of Tunisia. Emperor Charles V captured Tunis in 1535, but Khayr al-Dn defeated his fleet at the Battle of Preveza (1538), securing the eastern Mediterranean for the Turks for 33 years. His red beard was the source of the epithet Barbarossa, used by Europeans. Copyright © 1994-2008 Encyclopædia Britannica, Inc.
(Turkish ‘hero-lion') (born 1030—died November? 1072/January 1073) Second sultan of the Seljq dynasty, who added Georgia, Armenia, and much of Anatolia to his domains of Khorsn and western Iran. He preferred conquest to governing and left the administration of his empire to his famous vizier, Nim al-Mulk. In 1071 his victory over the Byzantine Empire at the Battle of Manzikert opened the door for the eventual Turkish conquest of Anatolia. He died a year later when mortally wounded by a prisoner during a quarrel. Copyright © 1994-2008 Encyclopædia Britannica, Inc.
